Local senator urges end to Stay-at-Home Order

From Senator Patrick McMath of Covington

To say I was disappointed in the Governor's announcement yesterday afternoon would be an understatement. I know you’re ready to get back to work. We are all ready to restart, rebuild, and revive our economy.

Two weeks ago, my colleagues and I sent a letter to Governor John Bel Edwards to tell him that a statewide, universal shutdown was NOT sustainable. Too often, battles become political footballs, so we wanted to privately and respectfully advise the Governor without politicizing the issue. We were looking for results over rhetoric. Obviously, he didn’t listen.

We must institute a regional approach to begin to responsibly and meaningfully reopen our economy. By taking a measured, regional approach to reviving our state, we can simultaneously fight the virus AND get our businesses' and residents back up and running. We can protect lives while restoring livelihoods.

The Governor made his decision. Now I am carefully weighing all options available to me and the legislature to address the extension of his stay at home order.

So what can you do? Two things: First, call the Governor at 866-366-1121 and make your voice heard. Second, sign and share this statewide petition www.openlanow.com

and show the Governor you believe in a responsible approach that will allow us to both address the virus and the economic livelihood of our people.
