Lady Lions picked 7th in Southland Preseason Poll

HAMMOND---With one of the biggest year-to-year turnarounds in the nation in 2019 under first-year head coach Jeremy White, Southeastern Louisiana was selected seventh in the Southland Conference Volleyball Preseason Poll presented by Ready Nutrition.

“It’s a great reflection of our program’s marked improvement from previous seasons,” White said. “Once again, we feel as though we have a team with the ability to outplay our ranking as we did during the 2019 season.”

In his first season at the Division I level, White took a team picked to finish dead last in the Southland Conference preseason poll and brought it back to the conference tournament for the first time in three seasons.

Southeastern (14-17, 8-8 Southland) wrapped up the 2019 regular season with the nation's third-largest improvement in wins, going from a pair of victories in 2018 to 14 this past season. He also led the Lady Lions to their most overall wins since the 2004 season and most conference wins since 2014.

The top portion of the poll shaped up as expected. After closing out the 2019 season with a 31-2 overall record and spotless 16-0 record in conference play, the Stephen F. Austin captured 16 first-place votes and 276 points to grab the top spot in this year’s preseason poll.

Sam Houston finished second in preseason voting with 266 points and eight first-place votes after closing out the 2019 campaign with an appearance at the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi placed in third place with 238 points and a pair of top choices. The Islanders also notched three preseason all-conference selections. Rounding out the top four is Central Arkansas with 220 points, which enters the season with a trio of preseason all-conference returners.

Houston Baptist received 199 points to round out the top five, while Northwestern State was voted to finish in sixth place with 181 points. Southeastern was picked to finish seventh after capturing 157 points, ahead of Abilene Christian’s 120 points for eighth place.

New Orleans (119), Nicholls (88) UIW (62), Lamar (57) and McNeese (45) round out the poll.

The preseason poll is voted on by head coaches and SIDs from each Southland volleyball school. Voting for one’s own team is not permitted.
