Former School Board member "Tank" Genco dies

Family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the death of longtime educator and former Tangipahoa Parish School Board member Leonard “Tank” Genco, Jr., who died Tuesday.

Funeral services will be held privately through Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home in Hammond for the 79-year-old, who served two terms (2003-2010) on the School Board. His District C seat included portions of Amite, where he was born, along with Loranger and Independence, where he coached and worked in the classroom for many years. He also worked for many years in the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office after his retirement from the school system.

Genco is survived by his wife Nedra; his children Ron and Mary and their spouses, along with two step-children, 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a large extended family.

He will be laid to rest at Pompeii Cemetery in Tickfaw.
