STPSO warns of scammers impersonating deputies

From the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office

The STPSO has recently received reports from individuals who have received phone calls and voicemails from a person who claims to be with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The caller states they are a deputy with the Sheriff’s Office and tells the individual that he or she has a warrant out for their arrest for “Failure to upgrade DNA” in the Sex Offender Registry.

The caller then offers the person an opportunity to pay a fine over the phone via Gift Cards or MoneyPak/Green Dot/Prepaid cards to “take care” of the warrant.

This is a scam. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office does not call individuals to “take care” of warrants and does not collect fines over the phone.

Criminals are now able to “spoof” Sheriff’s Office numbers and may use the names of actual Sheriff’s Office employees to help make the calls seem even more legit. If you receive a call from someone claiming to work for the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office and you are unsure if it is legit or not, the best practice is to hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office back at (985) 898-2338 or (985) 809-8200.

Please help by sharing this information so others do not fall victim to this scam.
