KPD asks for leads following shooting death
KENTWOOD---Authorities are asking the public for leads after a 17-year-old from Magnolia was killed and two 18-year-olds were wounded in a shooting at a house party in Kentwood Friday night.
Kentwood Police Chief Michael Kazerooni told the Enterprise-Journal that 17-year-old Felix Varnado of Magnolia died from injuries sustained in the shooting Friday night. The chief said the shooting happened after an argument; however, “those involved haven’t been identified.”
Kazerooni told the McComb newspaper that someone put Varnado in a car and was transporting him to the hospital when they met an ambulance in the Village of Tangipahoa. EMS transported the victim to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Two other Magnolia teens were shot in this case. Both are expected to recover, according to the newspaper report.
Kazerooni said most of the people “fled the party after the shooting;” however, officers did find 9 mm shell casings at the scene.
This is the latest in what residents describe as multiple violent incidents in Kentwood. Earlier this year, KPD confirmed shots fired after the Kentwood High-South Pike football game. The Enterprise-Journal also reports a shooting death during an attempted home invasion on Dec. 4 in Kentwood. In that case, the homeowner “wrestled the gun away” from a 21-year-old from McComb who was shot in the neck and shoulder.
Authorities ask that anyone with information on the Friday shooting case please contact KPD at (985) 229-6305.
