Amite mourns passing of Mayor Buddy Bel

The Town of Amite City is mourning the passing of its Mayor and longtime public servant, Buddy Bel, who died Sunday afternoon following a fall last week.

Bel was beginning the final year of his second term in office at the time of his death.

A longtime Amite businessman, Bel owned and operated the Amite landmark “Cabby’s Restaurant” with his wife Claire. The restaurant was an Amite institution through the turbulent economy of the late 1980s and into the 1990s. It was home to many of the Amite civic and social clubs. It was also a hotspot for local politics with many local political fundraisers being held inside Cabby’s bar and spilling out into the lush courtyard behind the building.

Bel loved local politics and served many years in public service to his town and to the parish as a whole. He was a Tangipahoa Parish School Board member back when there were 19 members on the board. He left that role and became an Amite Town Councilman, serving many terms on the board during the tenure of then-Mayor Reggie Goldsby.

In 2012, Bel ran for Mayor of Amite when Goldsby announced he would retire from public service. Bel won and served seven years in the post. In his last interview, he indicated he would like to run for a third term this fall.

Funeral services are being scheduled for later this week at the First United Methodist Church in Amite.
