Congressman-elect Luke Letlow has died with Covid-19

Congressman-elect Luke Letlow, whose North Louisiana-based district included most of Tangipahoa Parish, has died with Covid-19.

Governor John Bel Edwards issued this statement:

"It is with heavy hearts that Donna and I offer our condolences to Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s family on his passing after a battle with COVID-19.

"Congressman-elect Letlow felt a calling from a young age to serve the people of his home state, working behind the scenes for former Governor Bobby Jindal and serving as chief of staff to Congressman Ralph Abraham, who he was recently elected to succeed.

"COVID-19 has taken Congressman-elect Letlow from us far too soon. I am heartbroken that he will not be able to serve our people as a U.S. Representative, but I am even more devastated for his loving family. I hope all of the people of Louisiana will join Donna and me in praying for

"Congressman-elect Letlow’s family, especially his wife Julia and their two children, his many friends, and the people of the 5th Congressional District.

"Louisiana has lost more than 7,300 people to COVID-19 since March, and each one of them leaves a tremendous hole in our state.

"I have ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on the day of Congressman-elect Letlow’s funeral"

From Public Service Commissioner Eric Skrmetta:

I am at a loss for words this evening as I process this difficult news and tragic loss.

Luke Letlow was my friend. He was also a husband to Julia, father to two very young children, the former chief of staff to Congressman Ralph Abraham and a Member of Congress-elect to represent Congressional District 5 in northeast Louisiana.

His passing is a huge loss to our state and country. Just a few weeks ago, voters overwhelmingly chose Luke to represent them in Congress. It is our loss as we are going to miss out on the leadership that he was going to provide and is certainly needed.

If you didn’t know him, Luke was kind, caring, smart, dedicated, quick-witted, God-fearing, hard-working, honest and just an all-around good guy.

Luke's passing reminds me to be thankful everyday for all my blessings as life is a fragile gift. My heart is especially heavy for the two young children who no longer have their father.

Please join Debbie and me in praying for Letlow family.

From State Fire Marshal Butch Browning:

The State Fire Marshal family is offering its condolences, sadly again today, to the loved ones of Congressman-elect Luke Letlow as we learn of his passing due to Covid-19.

“This is a stunning loss that is hard to swallow,” said State Fire Marshal Chief Butch Browning, “Luke was a longtime personal friend and avid supporter of the fire service and law enforcement, even serving as a volunteer firefighter in north Louisiana.”

“The state has truly lost the opportunity to have a world-class ambassador on its side.”

Please join the SFM in prayer for Luke’s family, including his father who is the Fire Chief in Start, as well as his wife and young children.
