Back-to-School message from Sheriff Randy Seal
From the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office

During the past few months, we have grown accustomed to several words that were not commonly used prior to the introduction of COVID-19 to American society. Words such as pandemic, quarantine and social distancing have become all too common. Athletic events have been cancelled, along with the Washington Parish Free Fair, the Bogalusa Blues and Heritage Festival, the Bogalusa Balloon Festival and many other seasonal and fun family events. Many questions linger, including the question of whether or not we will have complete or even cancelled football schedules.

Now we are faced with a phrase that brings either comfort or anxiety to parents, teachers and students. “Back to school” is an annual event, but this year it takes on a special meaning as we navigate the uncertainties of a mysterious and sinister disease.

Through it all, we must be aware of the realities of increased traffic on our streets and highways, increased numbers of children walking to and from school, school busses stopping to pick up or drop off students and the many other facets of the school year. I won’t attempt to offer specific advice on protection from the virus. That is best left to medical professionals. I do, though, caution everyone to observe all traffic laws, be alert to students as they navigate their way to and from school and practice good safety and hygiene habits.

Most of all, I admonish everyone to love their children and to assure and comfort them during these turbulent times. Our children are our most precious asset and it is incumbent on each adult to protect them from all forms of evil.

Meanwhile, through everything, I remind the citizens of Washington Parish that your Sheriff’s Office is always available to assist you. If you need us, call us. We will respond.

As I settle into my third term as your Sheriff, I once again thank you for the confidence you have placed in me to lead such a prestigious office. You know me, you trust me and you can call me.
