AMITE---The Tangipahoa Parish Council is poised to take the most dramatic step in its' history toward land use control Monday night, with the introduction of an ordinance to require special permission for a long list of facilities.
Neighborhood opposition to a proposed Addiction Rehabilitation Center on Old Covington Highway has precipitated the ordinance, though Council Chairman Carlos Notriano, who represents the area, admits that there is only a slim chance that it can be stopped. But the new ordinance may provide a recourse for other controversial developments in the future.
The proposal specifies," To Require That Halfway Houses, Addictive Disorder Treatment Facilities, Juvenile Detention Facilities And Live In Mental Health Facilities (Not To Apply To People With Mental Retardation And/Or Developmental Disabilities) Be Permitted By And Through The Tangipahoa Parish Council-President Government".
At present, rural Tangipahoa has no zoning, but a master plan under development may provide some zoning in years to come.

SDT Waste President Sidney Torres IV has been named Grand Marshal of the Sicilian Festival which runs Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Independence.
